6 Terms Regarding Dental Implants in Dublin Made Simple!

There once was a time when a traditional set of dentures, a bridge or a dental crown were the only options for replacing missing teeth. Thankfully, patients now have a more reliable and aesthetically-pleasing option – dental implants in Dublin. If you’re considering this route for replacing your missing teeth, then there are 6 terms that you should know the meaning of first. Find out what they are as you continue reading!

#1 – Dental Implant

The best place to start the discovery process is with the term ‘dental implant’ itself. It refers to a cylinder-shaped titanium post that is attached to the jawbone. Through this insertion process, the fixture mimics the natural stability and smile aesthetics that come along with a normal set of teeth.

After the implant is placed, you’ll need three to six months to sufficiently heal. Then, you can have an abutment placed.

#2 – Abutment

An integral part of the implant placement process is the addition of the abutment. Also made from titanium, it acts as an anchor that is screwed into the implant and allows the final restoration to be attached in a secure manner.

#3 – Restoration

A restoration is a prosthetic fixture that is similar to the original tooth in both appearance and function. In most cases, the material used is porcelain because of its strength, durability and natural look.

#4 – Crown

If a single tooth is missing, then a dental crown can be used as a restoration. The porcelain fixture is securely attached to the abutment to allow for proper chewing, to prevent any shifting of the other teeth and to provide an aesthetic boost.

#5 – Bridge

In situations where three or more consecutive teeth are missing, a bridge can be utilized. It consists of a series of porcelain crowns affixed to one fixture.

#6 – Dentures

When a full arch or a complete set of teeth are missing, dentures are required to restore a normal smile. The appliances consist of porcelain teeth that are affixed to a resin base. However, unlike traditional dentures, the implant-retained option provides greater security and longevity by them being snapped or clamped into position.

Now that you’re better versed in the language of dental implants, you can feel more comfortable about moving forward with finally having your missing teeth replaced and your smile restored. The first step is to reach out to your local dentist to schedule a visit so your current condition can be assessed, and a full treatment plan can be developed.

By taking this initial step, you can get on the road to once again leading a happy and fulfilling life!
