Without a doubt, dental implants are the “cream of the crop” when it comes to tooth replacement. They are the only method that works beneath the gum line, mimicking the stability and strength of the original tooth root. While more and more people are choosing to receive implants, many are new to the procedure, which may make it a little intimidating. To lift the veil and make things simple, here are 6 key terms associated with dental implants in Dublin.

Dental Implant

A small, screw-shaped post, a dental implant is made from durable and biocompatible titanium. It is surgically attached to the jawbone to recreate the stability of the missing tooth root, fusing with the existing bone over the next few months. This creates a lasting foundation and support for the final restoration.

Abutment

The abutment is also made from strong titanium. It securely connects the dental restoration to the implant to create a functional and attractive smile.

Restoration

The restoration is the prosthetic tooth replacement. It can come in the form of an implant-supported crown, bridge or denture. Restorations are usually made from high-quality porcelain, which is chosen because of how closely it resembles the natural teeth and their strength.

Implant-Retained Crown

An implant-retained crown differs from the traditional type in that it doesn’t rely on the surrounding teeth for stability. Because it’s attached to an abutment and implant, you don’t have to worry about any shifting or lost functionality.

Implant-Retained Bridge

Similar to a traditional dental bridge, the implant version consists of two to four prosthetic teeth that are attached to the same appliance. However, the implant-retained bridge differs in that it doesn’t rely on being cemented to surrounding abutments (teeth). By being screwed into the underlying titanium abutments, this type of bridge won’t be subject to shifting.

Implant-Retained Denture

People who wear standard dentures have to rely on messy adhesives to hold their teeth in place. They also have to settle for eating a limited diet. With an implant-retained denture that is held in place by special connectors on the underside that attach to the abutments, you can look forward to fully using your teeth as if you were born with them.

With a broader understanding of the dental implant terms you should know, you don’t have to feel intimidated when you’re discussing the procedure. Knowledge is empowering, as it allows you to make your decision in a more confident manner.
